Our children are counting on us to do better

Updated: Oct 14

Every student and educator deserves to go to school and expect to come home safely.

Yesterday, I got another phone call that someone had threatened my daughter’s school.

If you’ve turned on the news almost any day since school has been back in session, you know I’m not alone in experiencing that terrifying phone call.

As a mom, it’s terrifying. But as a school psychologist and someone who wants to serve our state, it’s frustrating - because I know we’re not doing enough to prevent this.

So here is what I’m proposing:

  • Strengthen Tennessee’s safe storage laws - and punish parents and guardians who don’t do enough to prevent their children from getting their hands on a gun.

  • Pass extreme risk protection orders to prevent people who pose a danger to themselves or others from buying a gun.

  • Invest public dollars in safety measures and resources for public schools. We must fund our public schools adequately to provide better security, quality educational environments, and improved mental health care.

  • Repeal the law allowing teachers to carry concealed weapons. This only adds to the heightened tension in our classrooms. We should be funding security professionals and let teachers focus on teaching.

Thank you!
